An opal glass Huqqa bottle with painted and gilt decoration
India, Eighteenth Century
Height: 17.3 cm [ 6 ¾ in. ]
Diameter of mouth: 4.7 cm [ 1 7/8in. ]
Of spherical form, painted in blue with gilt outlines with a landscape containing naturalistic flowering plants, bamboo, two cockerels and chatri-like pavilions
Provenance
Acquired by the vendor in the 1970s
The scheme of decoration appears to be in imitation of Chinese blue and white porcelain. The style of decoration and in particular the naturalistic flowers and foliage would suggest a Deccani rather than a Mughal provenance.
