A Folio from the 'Large' Bhagavata Purana Series

Pahari, Basohli or Guler, circa 1765

Opaque pigments with gold on paper, red borders, a Sanskrit verse on reverse in Devanagari, with translation in the Kangra dialect of Punjabi, inscribed ‘painting 140/ chapter 45’ in Devanagari
9 1/2 by 13 3/8 in., 24 by 34 cm. painting
11 3/4 by 16in., 29.8 by 40.6 cm. folio

Inscriptions
The verse inscribed is numbered 113 but corresponds to Bhagavata Purana canto X, ch. 45, v. 24: ‘Thus consoling Nanda Mahārāja and the other men of Vraja, the infallible Supreme Lord respectfully honored them with gifts of clothing, jewelry, household utensils and so on.’
